The Forager

The perfect foldable knife for collecting mushrooms, harvesting herbs & foraging; a versatile hiking & outdoor tool handcrafted by our award-winning bladesmith Pieter van der Bank.

Based on a friction folder design, the blade has no locking mechanism but stays open by holding one's hand or thumb on the little tab at the back of the blade.

Dimensions & specs: 85 mm edge, 120 mm handle, 200 mm open length, 150mm closed length, 2mm thick steel. The blade is hollow ground with a 300mm radius on one side, and kept flat on the other. Brass washers maintain a smooth opening and closing action, all held together by a peened, steel pin. The blade is SAE 1070 carbon steel with a 400 grit machine finish, etched & stonewashed, and the handle is from blackened mild steel.

Handforged finish: Each Forager is individually forged by hand. The firescale is kept on the handle, both for a beautifully rustic feel and to make it more grippy. The firescale is sealed with oil for a blackened, non-stick surface.

Carbon Steel Durability: Handcrafted from SAE 1070 carbon steel, the Forager is designed to withstand the test of time. Carbon steel not only maintains a keen edge and sharpens easily, but also develops a natural patina over time, adding to the character of the steel.

Foldable: This knife features a foldable, "friction folder" construction method, utilizing brass washers on either side of the blade inside the handle for a smoother action. The opening and closing action is self-serviceable, as the steel pin needs simply a tap or two with a hammer to tighten it, should it ever open by itself due to wear and tear.

Carbon steel knife care: Carbon steel will rust if not cared for. After use, wipe clean by hand (NOT in a dishwasher), dry, and oil with a food-friendly oil such as olive oil, Ballistol, or mineral oil. A steel handle also benefits from a regular coat of oil or furniture wax. A detailed care sheet is supplied with each item.

Each Forager comes with a tin of protective wax made from Beeswax and Mineral oil.
